Game Calls
Gary’s calls have recently been featured
in the Mississippi callmakers collection though the NWTF. Many of
these calls have been auction off at both the State and National
Level and local banquets. |
The
Mission Statement of Magnolia Game Calls is: “To build quality
custom calls and make them affordable for the everyday turkey hunter”.
Magnolia Game Calls is owned and operated by Gary Joffrion Jr. of
Gulfport Mississippi. A firefighter by trade, Gary considers his
callmaking to only be a hobby. However with an annual production
of 300 – 500 calls a year and a defined mission statement for
marketing his calls, Gary is poised to turn this part time hobby
into a full time business in the very near future.
Gary
has lived his entire life in Gulfport MS and was introduced to the
world of hunting by his uncle at the early age of 12. Growing up
he spent most of his time hunting small game like squirrels and
rabbits but eventually became interested in deer hunting. The sport
of turkey hunting never caught his attention until one day while
deer hunting he heard his first series of gobbles from a wild turkey
on the roost. It would be several years later before he started
turkey hunting but an experience that now has him hooked.
Anytime
a hunter changes types of hunting they must first be outfitted with
the proper gear. For Gary this meant he would need to purchase a
turkey call and become proficient with it. After buying several
production line calls he became disappointed with the results they
produced and attempted to build a call of his own. After a few attempts
and failures he gave up the notion. Insistent on owning a custom
wood friction turkey call he ordered one from a custom callmaker
but was again so disappointed in the workmanship and quality of
the call he soon found himself back in the shop. Taking the lessons
learned from his first attempt he finally began producing a call
that meet his personal demands in both quality and sound. After
building a few calls, friends started wanting them and within months
he began selling them to the public.
Gary's
call line consists of slate type friction calls that come in four
choices of woods: Red oak, cherry, Honduras mahogany, and black
walnut. Customers can choose from the following calling surfaces:
Glass, slate or aluminum. Each call comes with a matched maple corncob
striker. If slate calls are not your fancy Gary also markets a full
line of laser engraved custom-built box calls. These box calls are
built using several variations and combinations of wood such as
sassafras, black walnut, ash, butternut, cherry, Purple Heart, eastern
cedar, and Honduras mahogany.
Customers
looking for calls with a personal touch can order the following.
Gary makes something called the “Special Memories” call,
which incorporates a picture of that, special someone or something
on the soundboard of the call. The second call is called “The
Ultimate Custom Call” which can be built with special piece
of wood from an old home place, special tree, or other meaningful
piece of wood the customer sends him.|
