Duck Calls
Brian
Watkins is no stranger to waterfowl hunting and making calls. Since
the age of 12, he has been making duck calls. He recently finished
college with a bachelor's degree in fisheries science from VA Tech
and is currently employed full time with the Virginia Institute
of Marine Science. During the day his job keeps him busy field sampling
different portions of the Chesapeake Bay. But in the evenings and
on weekends you can find him in the shop making calls.
Brian
takes orders for his calls and makes then from both domestic as
well as imported exotic hardwoods. His domestic woods feature cherry,
walnut and maple. His exotics species vary a great deal and availability
is a key concern for these woods. It's best to address special interests
direct with Brian. All his inserts are produced from Macasar Ebony
or Cocobolo.
Brian's
calls are fashioned after the single reed Arkansas style call. The
majority of his calls are hunting style calls, which now feature
brass bands on the barrel. Collector grade calls are a step above
the standard hunting call. These calls in most cases are either
checkered or laminated. Each call whether field grade or collector
grade receive an oil, lacquer, or polished finish and are sequentially
numbered. Brian takes pleasure in working with his customer to make
that special call that suites the need of the buyer just right.
Like many call makers Brian Watkins takes
great pride in his calls and guarantees them for the life of the
original owner.
